Sweet Potato Beef Burger Bowl

Welcome back to my healthy eating blog! If you’re new here, I love recreating comforting, familiar meals with a lighter, high-protein twist — keeping all the flavor while making them more balanced, nourishing, and easy to fit into a healthy lifestyle.

Today I’m sharing a recipe that has quickly become one of my go-to meals when I want something satisfying, protein-packed, and seriously crave-worthy:

Healthy Sweet Potato Burger Bowl — everything you love about a classic burger, but turned into a wholesome, high-protein bowl with crispy roasted sweet potatoes, seasoned ground beef, creamy avocado, and your favorite burger toppings.

This is one of those meals that feels indulgent… but is actually incredibly balanced.

What Is a Burger Bowl?

A burger bowl is exactly what it sounds like — all the flavors of a traditional burger, just without the bun. Instead of bread, everything is served in a bowl with a nutrient-dense base like roasted potatoes or vegetables.

This version uses crispy roasted sweet potatoes instead of fries, paired with perfectly seasoned ground beef and topped with creamy, tangy, and smoky elements that bring everything together.

The result?

A hearty, high-protein meal that hits every craving — savory, slightly sweet, smoky, creamy, and satisfying.

Why This Healthy Burger Bowl Works

High Protein & Filling

Using 93% lean ground beef keeps this bowl high in protein while still delivering that juicy, satisfying burger flavor.

Balanced & Nourishing

You’re getting fiber-rich carbs from sweet potatoes, healthy fats from avocado, and protein from both the beef and optional Greek yogurt.

Better Than Takeout

All the flavor of a fast-food burger bowl — but made at home with simple, whole ingredients.

Easy Meal Prep Recipe

This recipe is perfect for weekly meal prep. You can batch cook everything and assemble fresh bowls throughout the week.

Ingredient Spotlight

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber, vitamin A, and antioxidants. Roasting them at a high temperature gives you that crispy-outside, soft-inside texture that mimics fries — but in a healthier way.

Lean Ground Beef

A great source of protein, iron, and essential nutrients. Using 93% lean keeps this recipe lighter while still flavorful.

Mustard & Worcestershire Sauce

These two ingredients are KEY. They give the beef that classic “burger joint” flavor — slightly tangy, savory, and rich.

Avocado

Adds creaminess and healthy fats, making the bowl more satisfying and balanced.

Tips for the Best Burger Bowl

Cook Sweet Potatoes at High Heat
This is how you get that crispy exterior. Lower temperatures will steam them instead of roasting.

Don’t Over-Stir the Beef
Letting the beef sit in the pan helps it develop those slightly crispy edges — just like a smashed burger.

Use Fresh Garlic & Onion
This builds a strong flavor base and makes a huge difference.

Layer Your Flavors
Each component adds something different — sweet, savory, creamy, tangy — so don’t skip toppings.

Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb 93% lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/3 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp seasoning salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tomato, diced

Sweet Potato Base

  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced

Bowl Add-Ins

  • Avocado
  • Optional toppings: BBQ sauce, Greek yogurt, cheese, pickles, lettuce, or any favorite burger toppings

How to Make a Healthy Sweet Potato Burger Bowl

Step 1: Roast the Sweet Potatoes

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Peel and dice your sweet potato into small, even cubes. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast for 35–45 minutes, until:

  • Golden and slightly crispy on the outside
  • Soft and fluffy on the inside

This step is key for achieving that perfect texture.

Step 2: Cook the Aromatics

Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Add the diced onion and cook for 1–2 minutes, until fragrant and slightly softened. Then add the crushed garlic and sauté for a few seconds until aromatic.

Step 3: Brown the Ground Beef

Add the ground beef to the pan.

Use a meat masher (or spatula) to break it into very small pieces. For the best texture:

  • Avoid flipping too often
  • Let the beef sit and develop some browning

This creates those crispy bits that mimic a classic burger.

Step 4: Add the Spices

Sprinkle in:

  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Cumin
  • Seasoning salt
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne pepper

Mix gently until the beef is evenly coated and fully cooked.

Step 5: Build Flavor

Once the beef is cooked through, add the diced tomato and let it cook down slightly.

Then stir in:

  • Mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce

Let everything cook together for another 1–2 minutes so the flavors fully combine.

Step 6: Assemble the Bowl

In a bowl, layer:

  • Roasted sweet potatoes
  • Seasoned ground beef
  • Sliced avocado

Top with your favorite burger-style toppings like:

  • BBQ sauce
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Pickles
  • Lettuce

My Personal Notes (Don’t Skip These 👇)

These little tweaks are what take this recipe to the next level:

  • I love adding cinnamon and cumin because it helps balance out that strong “beefy” taste in minced meat and makes the flavor more warm and aromatic.
  • Adding mustard gives the beef that classic fast-food burger flavor — it honestly reminds me of that signature In-N-Out style taste.
  • BBQ sauce + ground beef + sweet potatoes is truly a match made in heaven. The sweet and smoky combination works so well together.
  • It is very important to cook the sweet potatoes at a high temperature so they get golden and slightly crispy on the outside while staying soft inside.
  • Avocado adds the perfect creaminess and balances the spices in the beef.
  • Adding Greek yogurt boosts the protein and helps bring everything together — it acts almost like a creamy sauce.
  • I love making this recipe because it’s quick, easy, and has all the flavors of a really good burger without needing a bun.
  • This recipe is super customizable — you can:
    • Swap sweet potatoes for regular potatoes
    • Add cheese for a more classic burger feel
    • Use different sauces depending on your mood

What to Serve with a Burger Bowl

This is a complete meal on its own, but you can pair it with:

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I make this sweet potato burger bowl ahead of time?

Yes! This is a great meal prep recipe. You can cook the sweet potatoes and ground beef in advance and store them separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. When ready to eat, reheat and add fresh toppings like avocado and Greek yogurt.

How do I keep the sweet potatoes crispy?

The key is high heat and spacing. Make sure:

  • Your oven is fully preheated

  • The sweet potatoes are spread out (not overcrowded)

  • You don’t cover them while baking

If needed, you can broil them for 1–2 minutes at the end for extra crispiness.

Can I use a different type of meat?

Absolutely. This recipe is very versatile. You can swap the ground beef for:

  • Ground turkey

  • Ground chicken

  • Ground lamb (for a richer flavor)

Just note that leaner meats like turkey may cook faster and have a slightly different texture.

Is this recipe good for weight loss?

Yes — this is a high-protein, balanced meal that can support weight loss. It includes:

  • Protein (ground beef, Greek yogurt)

  • Fiber-rich carbs (sweet potatoes)

  • Healthy fats (avocado)

Portion size and toppings will make the biggest difference depending on your goals.

What can I use instead of sweet potatoes?

If you’re not a fan of sweet potatoes, you can substitute:

  • Regular potatoes

  • Roasted butternut squash

  • Cauliflower (for a lower-carb option)

  • Rice or quinoa

What are the best toppings for a burger bowl?

You can customize this bowl however you like! Some popular options include:

  • BBQ sauce

  • Greek yogurt or a yogurt-based sauce

  • Shredded cheese

  • Pickles

  • Lettuce

  • Tomatoes

  • Caramelized onions

Think of it like building your perfect burger — just in a bowl.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes! Simply skip the Greek yogurt or replace it with a dairy-free alternative like a plant-based yogurt or tahini sauce.

Why add cinnamon and cumin to ground beef?

This is one of my favorite tricks. The cinnamon and cumin:

  • Reduce that strong “beefy” taste

  • Add warmth and depth

  • Make the flavor more balanced and unique

It gives the dish a slightly elevated, almost Middle Eastern-inspired flavor profile.

How do I store leftovers?

Store the components separately if possible:

  • Ground beef: up to 4 days in the fridge

  • Sweet potatoes: up to 4 days

Reheat in a pan or air fryer for best texture. Add fresh toppings after reheating.

How can I make this recipe even higher in protein?

Easy ways to boost protein:

  • Add more lean beef

  • Top with Greek yogurt

  • Sprinkle in some cottage cheese

  • Add a fried or boiled egg on top
